It’s about a newly minted police officer in Boston who was a minion of a crime lord before he became a cop, and remained so as a cop. The plot is thickened by another young cop from the same first year class (Leonardo DiCaprio), whose existence and identity is secret, because he is working undercover in the same crime outfit that the crooked cop stealthily supports. The subterfuge is baked into the plot. And this is a good movie that has received acclaim.
But guess what. The Departed is a remake of an excellent Hong Kong film, with basically the same plot and all Chinese actors, or at least all Asian actors. It was on the market four years before The Departed, and it’s called Infernal Affairs.
Both the Chinese and the Koreans have some very accomplished filmmakers and performers. So I guess I am suggesting that states that nurture the arts can also promote awareness at the same time. Governments that actively create inducements for aspiring artists are governments worth defending. Both the British and the Americans have supported the arts in the past, and both have since left it to their oligarchs to gobble up.
And one thing that I wanted to touch on, I think the elimination of a viable left anywhere in the West is actually the result of 85 years of zero tolerance in America for any expression of an organized opposition to capitalism as a system.

As much as FDR had done to lift workers into a revived economy in which they had a stake, the power elites sought to have him assassinated or removed from office because he had extended too much opportunity to the dregs.
From the end of WWII, the corporate elites were massively invested in scaring the crap out of all Americans with regard to Russia and communism. School teachers were instructed to explain that the Russians were godless and predatory, and will try to seduce naive Americans to serve their ends. Teachers had their elementary school children crouch under their desks in case of a nuclear war. This actually went on all over the country.
First there was the drunk Senator from Wisconsin, who was allowed to make loud, obnoxious accusations against writers and actors in Hollywood for their left-leaning stories and movies. Joe McCarthy was a crazed anti communist who promised that America was teeming with communists. In addition to going after Hollywood, he went after members of the U.S. Army. The crime wasn’t his belligerence and rude bullying, and baseless claims. It was his ability to always have a camera recording his fits of rage, and his empowerment provided by his status as a Senator,
Then there was J. Edgar Hoover who did little to curb organized crime, as the head of the FBI, but he travelled the country warning everyone of the scourge of communism and the untrustworthiness of Russians.
So this criminal indoctrination of children goes a long way to explain why the U.S. is a dysfunctional society, and why our left isn’t left at all.
But here’s the thing. The educated classes of my country and European states, mostly regarded free speech as a universal right, and they were marginalized whenever speech was against the state, and they were easily bought off. For the intellectual in America, fair compensation was not available if you remained committed to telling the truth about America. And the truth is that the West is completely in line with lying as a policy. Diplomacy is a vast opportunity to impose your demands, but don’t negotiate. Tell your electorate and your audiences whatever you want, because lying is cost free. This is our Epstein era, and the truth is under threat like never before in the West.
