The Enraging Myth That Rape is Not About Sexual Pleasure
Greg Stoker of Mint Press News recently stated that the systemic rapes of Palestinian children, women and men by Israeli forces should be seen as a mere "projection of power" - that rape itself is "not about sexual gratification." As a psychologist, I've been enraged by such ill-informed assumptions for years.
Reducing rape to some pragmatic weapon of war is not just misguided - it is a repugnant effort to sterilize one of humanity's most depraved acts. Suggesting that the widespread sexual violations we are witnessing emerge from the motivation to exert military dominance is an insult to the psyches and dignities of the victims. There is nothing strategic or pragmatic about it.
These are the hollow rationalizations of people who cannot handle the harsh truth - that the perpetrators derive sexual gratification from desecrating the bodies of innocent victims. The depravity is too visceral, too perverse to acknowledge. It is easier to frame it as some logical extension of the occupation's brutal methods of combat.

Yet how can one observe the systematic and repeated gang rapes of imprisoned children as young as 11 years old and delude oneself into believing it is about "projecting power"? When a 70-year-old Israeli general repeatedly violates a screaming and helpless child who’s blindfolded and tied to a bed, are we truly meant to believe that his erection is not born of some singularly unconscionable sexual pathology?
An erection stems from sexual desires, not mere assertions of dominance. To insist otherwise is a willful denial of the depredation's explicitly sexual nature.
The repugnant truth is that within a society that has brutalized and displaced the Palestinian people for decades inevitably grows a moral decay that contorts human sexuality into a self-gratifying fount of sadism. A society spawned from violence and exploitation has created human beings who have replaced caring intimacy with desecrating the vulnerable as a source of sexual arousal.

Indeed, sexual exploitation is most likely the dark ethos that drives Israeli Minister Smotrich's fixation on enslaving Palestinians, or Ben Gvir's demands that his soldiers livestream the sexual abuse of Palestinian prisoners to him. They are the warped psychological offshoots of a culture where inflicting torment, domination and humiliation has become an inter-generational perversion inextricably linked to sexuality.
Let us not obfuscate what we are witnessing - a people so morally depraved, so irredeemably lost to the anguishing depths of evil, that the very infliction of harm upon innocents is in itself a source of sexual arousal. The subjugation of the Palestinian people has spawned those who exult in raping children, reveling in their anguish, extracting depraved gratification from desecrating the helpless.
And yet, in one of his latest inflammatory speeches, Netanyahu still dared to label the victims of his genocide as "barbarians," while casting himself, Israel and its Western backers as the "civilized world." With an Orwellian reversal of reality commonplace in colonial cultures, he referred to the genocide's victims as "children of darkness," contrasting them with his regime and supporters as "people of light." Perhaps most demonically, Netanyahu branded Palestinians as "rapists," as his forces rape Palestinian children in a network of detention centers. This supreme reversal of perpetrator and victim casts a harsh light on the depraved extent Israelis will contort truth to justify oppression.
Pro-Palestinian Advocacy Must Relentlessly Amplify and Broadcast Allegations of Systemic Child Sexual Abuse in Israeli Detention Centers
Only in frankly naming and confronting this abhorrent truth can we hope to render the world aware of the shuddering immorality unfolding in front of our eyes. We cannot shrink from shining a light into the darkest corner of the Israeli abyss of human evil. The depravity of the occupiers must be dragged into the sun's remorseless glare.
For too long, the cries of those grievously violated have been muffled by empty justifications and impersonal analyses. No more. If we are to confront the malignant force behind their suffering and achieve any justice, we must deploy the unvarnished, shameful truth as our weapon. The world must be made aware of the depraved intertwining of sexuality and brutality that has festered during these years of occupation. Anything less is simply acting as a complicit denier of the truth.

Below the testimony of a Palestinian woman who recently was detained in an Israeli prison:
I learned, first from spending time with a senior criminal court judge in one western country and later from working in a child protection related field in another western country, that incest and sexual abuse of children even in "civilised" societies (i.e. not Israel) is far, far more common than people realise. The victims are made to keep quiet about it (sometimes from threats, sometimes deep shame, often to protect their own families from the seismic effects of it coming out), and the public can't bear to think about it and finds it easier to imagine a child would lie about such a thing (they don't) than to confront the grim reality.
Abusers, if they don't have children of their own, will often go to great lengths to groom potential victims, to get access to children, sometimes marrying single mothers, or choosing careers that give access (or side interests such as charitable activities or volunteer work that give social prestige so no one could imagine it of them, or even travelling overseas for access.
Now picture a grotesque society where anything goes (i.e. Israel). Where victims are incredibly easily found. Where, as long as the victim isn't "one of us", no one gives a shit what you do to them. Where anyone can move to, no questions asked as long as you're the right religion.
A paradise for abusers. A living hell for children.
How chilling. And yet so much part - albeit an extreme part - of the ‘human condition’. And it’s not only the men who commit these horrendous acts either; women are involved at least in the associated acts of humiliation. (And it’s been notable how many pro-Israeli women, when confronting female pro-Palestinian protesters scream at them that they hope they are raped. They are effectively a ‘rapers’ moll’ and totally complicit in the sexual violence perpetrated by ‘their boys’).
This barbarism cannot be undone, unknown. It has strengthened the power of this evil, this god which thereby becomes more and more accessible for others to reach elsewhere in the world. And reach out for it they will - especially in the West. No child, no woman will be safe from these people who will populate society at all levels. And who will support each other just as those explicitly agitating for the decriminalisation of sex with minors are doing.
But if you felt ‘safe’ here think again; soon all vulnerabilities will be ‘catered for’.
