Seas of Children’s Blood for One Single Corrupt Individual
New revelations further expose Benjamin Netanyahu's insatiable thirst for power
As the genocide in Gaza rages on for a staggering 10 months, a damning revelation has emerged from an unlikely source – Israel's own media. Haaretz, one of Israel's leading newspapers, has published a scathing piece titled "How Netanyahu has systematically foiled talks to release hostages from Hamas captivity." This unequivocal headline leaves no room for ambiguity: it directly implicates Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the single biggest barrier to ending the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
For months, peace talks and attempts to broker a resolution to the conflict have been systematically sabotaged, with Netanyahu's fingerprints all over the wreckage. Time and again, as families of hostages held by Hamas pleaded for their loved ones' return, Netanyahu has prioritized his own political ambitions over the lives of these innocent captives. His actions speak louder than any platitudes or warm words, revealing a callous disregard for human suffering and an insatiable thirst for power.
The evidence against Netanyahu is mounting, and the details are as chilling as they are damning. Haaretz's reporting (and the Electronic Intifada before it) has uncovered that the Israeli military widely employed the Hannibal directive during the Hamas attack on October 7th – a directive that mandates the use of any means necessary to prevent the capture of Israeli soldiers, even if it involves killing them. This directive, once active, turned the fenced area separating Gaza and Israel into a killing zone, with Israeli forces firing indiscriminately at Palestinians returning to the strip with captured Israelis.
The implications of this directive are nothing short of horrific. A government that regards the lives of its own citizens as expendable, ordering their execution rather than allowing them to be taken hostage, is unlikely to negotiate in good faith for the release of hostages held by its adversaries. This callous disregard for human life is further compounded by the fact that Israel itself holds thousands of Palestinian hostages, including many children, on trumped-up or non-existent charges, stripping away any moral high ground it might have claimed.
But the damning revelations do not end there. Haaretz's reporting details a systematic campaign by Netanyahu to undermine and sabotage every attempt at brokering a peace deal or securing the release of hostages. From arbitrarily toughening negotiating stances without consulting the war cabinet to leaking confidential information that derailed delicate talks, Netanyahu has left a trail of destruction in his wake, all in the pursuit of preserving his own power.
Even as mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and other countries applied pressure on Israel to reach an agreement, Netanyahu remained unmoved, bowing instead to the demands of his hard-right coalition partners, such as Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. In one particularly egregious instance, Smotrich threatened Netanyahu's fragile coalition, prompting the prime minister to abandon peace talks and instead pursue a "total victory plan" against Hamas – a plan that sparked the genocidal assault on Rafah, where 2 million Palestinians are trapped.
Netanyahu's actions are not those of a leader seeking peace and justice; they are the actions of a desperate man clinging to power at any cost, even if it means sacrificing the lives of millions of Palestinians and his own citizens. His refusal to bring the war cabinet together, his constant leaking of confidential information, and his outright cancellation of agreements reached by negotiation teams paint a picture of a leader who has lost all moral compass.
Stop Waiting for the West
The world must finally take matters into its own hands and stop always waiting for the West to lead in crucial decision-making processes, especially in the face of such blatant disregard for human life and the rule of law. Sanctions must be imposed on Israel, and the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court for Netanyahu and his defense minister, Yoav Gallant, must be enforced. The United Kingdom's attempt to block this prosecution is another piece of evidence that the shield bearers of the so-called ‘democratic’ West are active contributors to yet another genocide on non-white people’s of the earth.
Moreover, a UN humanitarian mission, heavily monitored to avoid human rights abuses by its own staff, must be deployed to ensure that aid reaches Gaza unimpeded, without interference from Israeli soldiers, settlers, or any other parties seeking to prolong the suffering of the Palestinian people.
The road to peace is long and arduous, but it cannot be achieved by waiting for the West to suddenly see the light and abandon its centuries-old genocidal impulses, nor while Benjamin Netanyahu remains in power. Their actions have proven time and again that they are not willing participants in the pursuit of justice and self-determination for the Palestinian people. They are obstacles, cancers that must be excised out of the peace process if there is to be any hope for a lasting and just resolution to this illegal occupation.
The revelations from Haaretz should serve as a wake-up call to the international community. It is time to hold Israel accountable for its actions, to strip away the veil of impunity that has allowed this genocide to continue unchecked for far too long. The lives of innocent civilians hang in the balance, and the world can no longer afford to turn a blind eye to the machinations of a power-hungry leader who has shown utter contempt for human rights and the rule of law.
